Symbiocene as a new era?
Australian environmental scientist Glenn Albrecht proposes the concept of the symbiosis as a successor to the Anthropocene. He criticizes a society that is shaped by growth-oriented industry and technology and achieves its success at the expense of biodiversity and the Earth’s carrying capacity. Instead, he argues for a new era in which humanity lives symbiotically with the environment and relies on the principles of sustainability and coexistence.
As Glenn Albrecht puts it: “In the hope that this will happen in a relatively short time (perhaps decades), a point will be reached in humanity’s social evolution where almost every aspect of culture, agriculture, economy, habitat and technology will be seamlessly reintegrated into earthly, symbiotic life.”
