Update on CBAM

Update on the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM): The first CBAM reports are due on January 31, 2024.

Companies that import iron and steel, aluminium, hydrogen, cement, electricity or fertilizers from non-EU countries into the EU must report the CO₂ emissions of these goods and submit a so-called CBAM report to the CBAM transition register on a quarterly basis – for the first time for the 4th quarter of the previous year. The deadline ends one month after the end of each quarter. From 2026, an import levy will be due if the environmental requirements in the country of origin are lower than in the EU and there is no other compensation.

Until July 31, 2024, companies can use standard values published by the EU Commission at the end of December 2023 to calculate emissions. After that, the actual emission values must be determined and reported.

Coordination with suppliers and manufacturers in third countries is of central importance when calculating CO₂ emissions.
