Peatlands are important ecosystems and CO2 reservoirs that are often several thousand years old.

Worldwide, 80 % of the moors are still intact. In Germany, however, more than 90% of the moorland was drained in the past. The good news is that after rewetting, the ecosystems can recover. In Indonesia, for example, a separate government agency for peatland restoration is now taking care of this.

One piece of the puzzle to mitigate climate change is Carbon Farming – managing greenhouse gas fluxes in agriculture. The idea is to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and store it in soils and vegetation.

This is done through the rewetting of peatlands and, in some projects, through so-called Paludiculture. Here, peatlands are used as a habitat for water buffalo or as a cultivation area for building materials such as reeds, black alder or peat moss.
