The limits to thought

In another post, we already introduced you to the 1972 Club of Rome report, The Limits to Growth. One of the main authors, the American pioneer of environmental analysis, Donella H. Meadows, has dealt with the limits to thought in her recent work.

Meadows studies the complex and ever-expanding social and ecological systems we find ourselves in. She uses simple examples from everyday life to show how systems evolve and how our actions can often result in unforeseen consequences. Moreover, she says, complex systems are governed by invisible feedback loops that influence each other.

Therefore, to solve the global problems of our time, we need to develop a deeper understanding of the roots of these challenges, and to grasp how they are embedded in the whole system. Then, so-called key points can be identified, where minimal changes can have a big impact. This insight can help us make better decisions, and…
…overcome the limits of thought.
