A spark of hope for nature protection

The Amazon rainforest is known as a diverse, complex ecosystem and natural CO2 sink, as the settled trees store huge amounts of CO2.

However, deforestation and co. contribute, among other things, to the acute threat to the Amazon rainforest’s function as a natural sink. Since 2021, the eastern part of the Amazon is no longer considered a CO2 sink.

Preserving complex ecosystems like the Amazon rainforest is what COP15 recently committed to at the World Nature Summit in Canada. 30% of the global land and ocean area is to be placed under protection by 2030.

This will also benefit the Amazon region with its special importance for biodiversity, for the functioning of ecosystems, and as a natural CO2 sink.
