The causes of food loss and waste

Globally, one-third of all food produced ends up in the trash.

A transformation in this area can make food healthier and more cost-effective and save a lot of climate-relevant emissions – food waste is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases, accounting for up to 10%.

A good example in dealing with food waste is South Korea. There, it is possible to use uneaten food as fuel, animal feed or fertilizer.

The picture shows where losses occur along the value chain and where there is potential for improvement.
